Computer :General introduction

PUNCHED CARDS and ELECTRONIC COMPUTERS

Punched Cards Dr. Heman Hollerith developed a  Computer with some special features. he worked in the Census Department of the  USA. he used punched cards to store data which he fed into the machine that computed the results mechanically. each punch on a card represented one letter. The speed of these Computer  was very high. The reading and writing of data was done in the coded form of a punched card. These cards were used to store data. Punched cards reduced the number of errors and was very easy to handle. It processed late amount of data. Electronic Computers With the passage of time lots of developments took place in the field of Computer . With the new technology, computers started growing with time. In 1930,asked Howard Aikens to make an electronic computer. Before this all the computers used were mechanical. Mark-1 The first electronic computer was about 15metres long. The wires connecting various parts of machine were about 800 kms. This comput...

DIFFERENTIAL ENGINE

THE REAL BEGGINING OF COMPUTERS OCCURED IN THE 19TH CENTURY,WHEN CHARLES BABBAGE   INVENTED FIRST MECHANICAL COMPUTER. THIS LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE MODERN COMPUTER. CHARLES BABBAGE WAS A PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS AT THE CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY .HE FIRST INVENTED A MACHINE THAT WAS USED TO CALCULATE THE RESULT OF DIFFERENT EQUATIONS.THIS MACHINE WAS CALLED  DIFFERENTIAL ENGINE   .THIS MACHINE GOT POWER FROM STEAM.THE MACHINE HAD SOME INSTRUCTIONS STORED IN IT AND THE IT PERFORMED CALCULATIONS ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS THE DIFFERENTIAL ENGINE WAS ACCURATE UP TO 20 TH POSITION OF DECIMAL. AFTER 10 YEARS LATER, BABBAGE INVENTED THE FIRST GENERAL COMPUTER KNOW AS THE ANALYTICAL ENGINE.IT HAS THE SAME BASIC ELEMENTS AS THE MODERN COMPUTERS. THE ANALYTICAL ENGINE HAD INPUT,OUTPUT AND MEMORY DEVICES .THE INPUT DEVICE HAD PERFORATED CARDS WHICH CONTAINS INSTRUCTIONS .THE ANALYTICAL ENGINE HAD MEMORY WHICH WAS LARGE ENOUGH TO STORE 1000 NUMBERS UP TO 50 DECIMAL DIGITS LO...

ARITHMETICAL REPLICA and ARITHOMETER

Arithmetical Replica:- In 1694,a German mathematician and philosopher Gotofuied Withem Von Leibuiz improved Pascaline by creating a machine that could also multiply and divide. This mechanical machine worked with the help of gears and dials. Arithometer:- Charles Xavier Thomas de colmar, a Frenchman fabricated a machine that could perform the four basic arithmetic functions of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

SLIDE RULE and PASCALINE

Slide rule:- The slide rule was invented by William Oughlted. Calculations in the slide rule are done using Logarithms. Pascaline :- Blaise Pascal invented a numerical wheel wheel calculator. this calculator consisted of a rectangular box which had eight movable wheels. It was used to sum numbers, consisting of eight digits.the speed of adding a number using PASCALINE was very fast as compared to the other devices available at that time .

NAPIER'S BONES

In 1617,Sir John Napier constructed a calculating device for multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. This device is made up of a set of eleven rectangular rods. Each rod was divided into ten squares. The top squares had digits 0 to 9.The square below had the multiple of the digit written in them. By placing rods in Line in a special manner, can be used for multiplying large number with high speed. The improved version Napier's bones was used for division and square roots also. These rods were made up of curved bones and that is why the device is known as Napier's Bones.

COMPUTER-A MACHINE

Dear friends, look at these pictures. These are pictures of different machines. Machines are man-made things. They help us to do different types of work. All machines have some things in common. Most machines run on electricity Some machines run on fuel. Some machines work with human power. In the same way.... A Computer is also a machine. it runs on electricity. a Computer can do many things. Let us see, what does a Computer do.
