In 1617,Sir John Napier constructed a calculating device for multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. This device is made up of a set of eleven rectangular rods. Each rod was divided into ten squares. The top squares had digits 0 to 9.The square below had the multiple of the digit written in them. By placing rods in Line in a special manner, can be used for multiplying large number with high speed.
The improved version Napier's bones was used for division and square roots also. These rods were made up of curved bones and that is why the device is known as Napier's Bones.
